In communities across the United States, attitudes toward addiction are beginning to shift — and Willo Recovery Network is helping lead the way. Once viewed only through the lens of shame, substance use disorder is increasingly recognized as a complex medical condition that requires compassion, structure, and long-term support.
Last month, Willo hosted a community education event where over 120 residents, local leaders, and families gathered to discuss how stigma impacts people in recovery. Participants shared personal stories, explored the science behind addiction, and learned how simple acts of understanding can change lives.
“Every time a community chooses compassion over judgment, recovery becomes more possible,” said Willo Recovery Network Program Director, Sarah Mitchell. “We’re seeing more people step forward to support their neighbors, and that creates real change.”
The event concluded with a pledge wall where attendees wrote commitments such as “I will listen without judgment” and “Everyone deserves a second chance.”
Willo Recovery Network plans to expand these outreach efforts in 2025, with more workshops, school presentations, and community partnerships. Together, these initiatives aim to replace stigma with connection — one conversation at a time.
